Ductwork: Design, Repair, and Replacement

Most Central Texas comfort complaints — hot rooms, high humidity, high bills, noisy vents — are duct problems in disguise. Duct design is the single most under-taught skill in HVAC. It's where we spend the most time.

Design principles

We size ducts using Manual D principles — friction rate targeted to available static pressure, adequate return path, correctly located and sized supply diffusers. Not rule-of-thumb, not what fits in the ceiling.

Return air problems

Undersized returns are epidemic in Central Texas homes. Symptoms: whistling grilles, high static, low CFM, humidity issues. Fixes range from adding a second return to upsizing plenum takeoffs. We measure before we cut.

Sealing and insulation

Duct leakage in unconditioned attics wastes 20–30% of your cooling. Mastic sealing at joints and boots, R-8 insulation, and platform-return replacement where present.
