Five common causes
Failing dual-run capacitor, hard-start conditions on an aging compressor, grounded windings in the compressor, contactor stuck or pitted, or a wiring fault (often at the disconnect or whip).
What NOT to do
Don't repeatedly reset the breaker. Each reset attempt on a grounded compressor can escalate damage or start a fire. One reset, if it trips again, shut it off and call.
