The phase-down
R-410A is a high-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerant and is being phased down under U.S. regulation. New residential equipment has largely transitioned to lower-GWP options — primarily R-32 and R-454B.
What this means for buyers
New systems sold today largely use the new refrigerants. Existing R-410A systems can still be serviced and repaired — refrigerant supply is available but pricing will shift. When you replace, you replace the outdoor unit and indoor coil together (they must match refrigerant).
Safety and handling
R-32 is classified A2L — mildly flammable but only under specific concentration and ignition conditions. Modern equipment is designed with the necessary safety features. Installation and service require training and proper leak detection.
