What Manual D does

Manual D is the ACCA method for residential duct design. You start with room-by-room loads and required CFM, then design a duct system that delivers those flows while keeping total external static pressure inside the blower's rated range.

Why installers cut corners

Right-sized ducts often don't fit the truss and joist bays builders leave for them. So installers pinch runs, use too many elbows, and undersize returns. The system 'works' — cold air comes out — but airflow is short and static is high, hurting efficiency and comfort.
